Investing in your workforce may sound like a complex or time-consuming undertaking; however, it doesn’t have to be. Small, consistent efforts can make a significant impact. Here are three practical ways employers can actively support employee development:

1. Cross-Train Employees to Build Flexibility
   Cross-training enhances operational resilience and gives employees the opportunity to develop new skills. It also boosts self-confidence and creates a more agile team capable of adapting to change. Cross training could look like this: Setting aside a specific time each month for staff who work in similar roles to review, observe and temporarily work in each other's roles. Employees who are interested in expanding their knowledge beyond their current role could also benefit from this approach. Use team meetings and dedicate time for a specific team or individual staff member to share key job duties, tools,  and skills they use in their jobs.  

2. Encourage Peer-to-Peer Mentorship and Collaboration
   Create a culture where employees feel safe to ask questions, share feedback, and try new ideas. Peer mentoring fosters trust, knowledge sharing, and a stronger sense of community in the workplace. Peer mentoring can be younger team members sharing skills as well as older staff. Be open to cultivating consistent opportunities for connecting and education. 

3. Schedule Regular Development Conversations
   Set aside time to talk with employees about their professional goals and aspirations. Keep these conversations separate from performance reviews to ensure they stay focused on growth, not evaluation. Make it essential for managers to do this at least once a year and keep records so that you may refer to the information, and act on it.
